The block ships were put up as defences against submarines in the First World War, in between the South Isles of Orkney. However, in 1939 a German U-Boot managed to slip past them into the Bay of Scapa Flow and torpedoed and sank the HMS Royal Oak. Afterwards, the Churchill Barriers were built, which today link the islands. The block ships have become popular diving locations.
