Orkney Archaeology - the Knowe of Swandro on Rousay

Updated: Jun 15

Orkney is a feast for archaeologists, with so many sites strewn across the islands.

This is no different on Rousay. The Tingwall ferry takes visitors from the West Mainland to Rousay.

One of the archaeological highlights there is the Knowe of Swandro excavation.

East of the Midhowe Cairn there is a stretch of structures and remains from various periods of time, from neolithic to viking.

In the Bay of Swandro the focus of the archeologists is the Knowe of Swandro, with remains of a neolithic grave, brochs from the Iron Age, remains of pictish houses and a viking settlement, including viking boat burials.

Most of the artefacts can only be seen at low tide, so the time for digging is always short. In a race against time, every summer, the archaeologists gather here to gain more knowledge and uncover the site. Eventually, the sea will swallow the ruins and bury them forever.

In July and August the site can be visited when the archaeologists are at work at the Knowe of Swandro.
